What are tags? #
Tags are internal labels you add to campaigns (and sometimes transactions) to help you organize, filter, and report on your fundraising activity behind the scenes.
Supporters never see tags — they’re purely for admin and reporting purposes.
Think of tags like sticky notes you attach to campaigns so you can quickly understand what they’re for and how they should be grouped later.
Why tags are useful at the campaign level #
Campaign tags help you: #
- Group similar campaigns together (e.g.
Membership,Event,Peer-to-Peer) - Quickly filter and find campaigns in your dashboard
- Export transaction reports that already include campaign context
- Analyze performance across multiple campaigns that share a goal or purpose
Examples: #
Membership_FY25GalaMonthly_GivingFeeForService
When you export transactions, these tags are included in the data, making it much easier to sort and analyze in spreadsheets or BI tools.
Where can tags be added? #
Tags can be added and managed in multiple places across FundRazr, depending on how you’re working and what you’re tagging.
Add tags from the transaction report #
You can add tags directly from the transaction report, which is available in two places:
- From an individual campaign page
- From the organization page, where you can view transactions across all campaigns
This is useful when you’re reviewing contributions and want to apply tags to your reporting or reconciliation workflow.
Add tags from campaign and sub-campaign lists #
Tags can also be added without opening individual campaigns:
- From the Sub-campaigns list under a main campaign
- From the Campaign list on the organization page
This makes it easy to tag multiple campaigns for:
- Programs or initiatives
- Fiscal years
- Revenue types (e.g. events, memberships, fee-for-service)
When to use each option #
- Transaction report: Best for reporting, reconciliation, and detailed review
- Campaign or sub-campaign lists: Best for high-level organization and grouping campaigns
All tags added in these locations are available in exports and reports, helping you filter and analyze your fundraising data more efficiently.
Why tags are useful at the organization level #
At the organization level, tags help you: #
- See the bigger picture across all campaigns
- Segment reporting by program, fund, or fiscal year
- Maintain consistent internal tracking as your fundraising grows
- Reduce manual cleanup when preparing reports for finance, leadership, or auditors
Tags are especially helpful when: #
- You run many campaigns throughout the year
- You have multiple programs or revenue types
- You need consistent reporting across teams
What tags don’t do (important to set expectations) #
- Tags do not automatically group donors in the FundRazr UI
- Tags do not change donor receipts or tax treatment
- Tags do not replace transaction-level reporting
- Tags do not automatically sync as donor tags in email tools (like Mailchimp)
They’re best thought of as reporting and organization tools, not donor-facing features.
Best practice tip #
Use a simple, consistent tag structure, such as:
- Program:
Membership,Education,Advocacy - Fiscal year:
FY25 - Revenue type:
Recurring,OneTime,FeeForService
This way, when you export your data, you can slice it exactly how you need – without extra manual work.
