For the past eight months, I have spent six nights a week documenting the protests outside Portland's ICE detention center, often streaming three hours a night with my YouTube channel Pretend Media www.youtube.com/@pretendmedia. While I personally hold strong views about immigration enforcement and the role of ICE, my goal as a journalist has always been to provide fair, balanced, and transparent coverage of the events as they unfold. Rather than telling viewers what to think, I focus on showing them what is happening on the ground and allowing them to draw their own conclusions.

I want to bring that same approach to local detention facilities and anti ICE protests. The events taking place are attracting national attention, and I believe there is tremendous value in having more independent journalists present to document what is happening. Every additional camera provides another perspective, another record of events, and another opportunity for the public to understand the situation beyond headlines and sound bites. Independent journalism plays a vital role in ensuring that important stories receive sustained attention and that voices from all sides of an issue are heard.
Independent journalists often have the flexibility to cover stories that larger media organizations overlook or cannot dedicate resources to covering consistently. By spending hours on the ground, night after night, we are able to capture the context, conversations, and developments that may never make it into a traditional news segment. My goal is not to replace mainstream media, but to complement it by providing direct, unfiltered access to events as they happen.
By traveling to detention centers and anti ICE protests and contribute to a broader public understanding of the issues surrounding immigration enforcement, detention facilities, and public protest. The more eyes that are on a story, the harder it is for important developments to go unnoticed. I believe independent journalism serves the public best when it is present, persistent, and willing to document events wherever they occur.
