October 12 2024, I will stand atop the towering structure of the Truist Place building, my gaze fixed on the precipice that beckons me to take the plunge, my soul acutely aware of the heartbreaking legacy of addiction that has plagued families for generations. This urban rappel represents far more than just an extreme physical challenge - it is a symbolic act of defiance, a resolute determination to break the cycle that has caused so much pain and turmoil. Each step down the vertical descent will signify my rejection of the shame, the helplessness, and the sense of being trapped that has become all too familiar for millions of people. I know that this journey down the perilous edge will not only test the limits of my own fears and abilities, it will also serve as a beacon of hope for those still struggling under the weight of substance use disorder and addiction. This is my chance to disrupt the narrative, to shatter the chains that have bound people I love, and countless others and to forge a new path forward - one paved with resilience, self-worth, and the unwavering belief that addiction need not define us. With a deep, steadying breath, I will take that first step, driven by the knowledge that my triumph will reverberate through the generations, offering a roadmap for those who have once felt hopelessly lost.
