I was raised in a small town in Manitoba with the freedom to roam and play in safety. This was a time when kids came home for dinner after a carefree day spent exploring. Neighbours watched out for each other’s children and the fear of sex trafficking never even entered our minds. I grew up assuming this was how privileged all children were. The ugly truth is that this is not the case!
Over the years, I became more aware of human trafficking as I came across articles and attended fundraisers for organizations working in the front-line fight against the global problem of sexual exploitation. I always felt outraged that the world’s most vulnerable were being exploited. I felt compelled to learn more about the problem, to share more about what I’ve learned with those I know, and to do what I can to support those working in the front-line battle of this global and local problem. Yes it happens right in your own city and probably even in your own neighbourhood.
As the mother of three I would be devasted if any of my children were victims of trafficking. How can I sit back while other mothers see this happen to their children? Each of them is precious. We are called to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly. Let’s all do our part to help conquer this mountain of injustice one step at a time.
