We voice it as such because it\u2019s logical. It\u2019s ingrained in us that money is \u2018taboo\u2019 to talk about. So that&#8217;s the part we must be afraid of, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or is it that we\u2019re afraid to ask for help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My empathy spikes when I hear this fear from campaign owners &#8211; directly or implied. It\u2019s never the organized non-profits with professional fundraisers or established creators with a large fanbase ready to fund a project. It\u2019s the individuals running their first campaign for something that will improve their lives&#8230; and they\u2019re afraid to ask for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong>Fear is a bridge to cross<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Allow me to make a few assumptions about you, dear reader:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You are more than happy to help others, even at a cost to yourself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You often think, \u201cI can handle this alone.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When praised or complimented, you feel shy and awkward and try to bounce the compliment back or attribute it to someone else.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re wondering if you\u2019re \u201cright\u201d to run this campaign.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is me. I have reasons for being this way, and so do countless others like me. Those reasons are not the point of this article, and working through them requires a much deeper understanding of psychology than I have. However, I believe it gives me a valuable perspective on this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">While fear itself is innate, fear of asking for money, of asking for <em>help<\/em>, is not. It is learned. By the end of this article, I hope to help you begin to <em>unlearn<\/em> it and feel confident when hitting the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fundrazr.com\/create\">\u2018Create your campaign\u2019<\/a><\/strong> button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong>Why do we fear asking for money?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fear is a good thing. It keeps us alive. Otherwise, we\u2019d all be free soloing up cliff faces alongside<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alex_Honnold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Alex Honnold<\/a> (whose brain&#8217;s fear centre is unusually inactive).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then why am I about to help you try to kick it out the door?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fear is not serving you. Your life is not in danger. There is no imminent threat, but you sure feel like there is. Your fear is anxiety, and it\u2019s trying to protect you. Anxiety evolved and survived because it helps us perceive future danger and avoid it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I prefer to think of it as having an overactive inner critic who won\u2019t shut their mouth. I imagine my inner critic as a yappy person that I don\u2019t particularly like but hangs around anyway. When they get too loud, I scream (internally) ENOUGH. That\u2019s it. One word, over and over. Enough. Some days it doesn\u2019t work. Most days, though, it does. But that took practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong>Fear and crowdfunding<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at common fears in crowdfunding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>people won\u2019t help\/my campaign will fail <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>people will judge me or get annoyed at my ask<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>it\u2019ll be too much work\/I won&#8217;t be able to deliver my promises<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>people will think I&#8217;m lying? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>people will get annoyed because they\u2019re too busy <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;ll succeed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you see what words fit easily in front of each point?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What if.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s all these are; they\u2019re <em>maybes<\/em>. They are your brain trying to rationalize what you will do in case these situations arise. Well, then, let\u2019s do a little thought experiment!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong><em>What if people don\u2019t help or my campaign fails?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have never seen a well-crafted, properly promoted campaign that doesn\u2019t raise at least <em>some<\/em> funds. I\u2019ve seen hundreds of campaigns with one or two lines and a stock photo thrown in raise nothing. Understandably so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you aren&#8217;t going to be so lazy (we have <a href=\"https:\/\/connectionpoint.com\/fundraiserhub\/category\/toolkits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">easy-to-follow<em> toolkits to help!<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your campaign doesn\u2019t hit its goal, then try again! Work with a coach, utilize our toolkits, and try to find where you meandered off the path. \u2018Failure\u2019 has a bad rep, and it shouldn\u2019t. Failure means you still have something to learn. And we let you try as many times as you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong><em>What if people judge me or get annoyed at my ask?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are there people you know who would do that? Then they aren\u2019t in your community any longer. I give you permission to dump them. Deny their gift, say thanks but no thanks, and walk away with your head high. You will not and cannot appease every human being. If you can, go run to the UN right now. They need you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>True loved ones are happy to help if they can. If they cannot help you financially, then ask them to share your campaign. A share can be worth more than what a person gives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong><em>What if I can\u2019t handle the work or deliver on my promises?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proper planning is essential. Once a campaign is up and running, the work is quite minimal. Rewards you have to ship might add in more work, so <a href=\"https:\/\/connectionpoint.com\/help\/docs\/rewards-creation-guide-types-set-up-editing-deleting-discontinuing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">limit the amount available<\/a> to what you can manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have done (and continue to do) so much to these platforms to take work off your hands. And if you feel the stress is unmanageable, why not start smaller? Build your confidence in your abilities and the platform. You do not have to rush into this full steam ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong><em>What if people think I\u2019m lying?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oooh, the scammers&#8230; they ruin things for us all. Yes, fraudulent campaigns exist. But those people are not reading this post. You are, which tells me that you want to run a campaign for the right reasons. If you are authentic, transparent, and honest, people will read that in your story, see it in your pictures, and hear it in your videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People won\u2019t think you are being facetious for no reason. When we get reports that a campaign might be fraudulent, they are backed up with proof (<a href=\"https:\/\/connectionpoint.com\/help\/docs\/how-do-i-report-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plus, we will not act on a fraud report without it<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong><em>What if&#8230; what if I SUCCEED???<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I believe my readers will be one of two types: you either question why this would be a fear, or you know <em>exactly<\/em> what I\u2019m talking about. If you\u2019re the former, great, skip this part. If you\u2019re the latter&#8230; my friend, <em>you deserve this.<\/em> You did the work, and you have the support. Go forth and make your mark. You. Deserve. This.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><strong>How can we work through the fear of asking for money?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Suggestions I give here are just that&#8230; suggestions. If you don&#8217;t find they help, that&#8217;s okay. I urge you to do an internet search on overcoming the fear of asking for help; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/passion\/201601\/the-power-asking-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Psychology Today<\/em><\/a> has an article I particularly enjoy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise, here are some tips that have helped me and others I know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Acknowledge and embrace your fear as an emotion. Say hello. Think or journal about why you might be feeling it. Don\u2019t ignore it or dismiss it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redefine how you perceive success. Success in crowdfunding isn&#8217;t always black and white. Sure, there is \u2018hit my goal or didn\u2019t hit my goal.\u2019 However, goals can be completely arbitrary. If you have a campaign and one person donates, your story has successfully connected with at least one person. It\u2019s okay to try again. It\u2019s taken your time, which is precious, but to do something well does take time and effort.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write the benefits to your supporters (endorphins, tax breaks, education on a subject, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get up every morning and say\/write, \u201cI deserve this.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another thought experiment: If your best friend, your favourite person, was asking for the same help, would you not be first in line?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aim for authenticity. Don\u2019t try to do\/be\/say anything that isn\u2019t your truth. If someone responds to this truth suggesting it&#8217;s anything but, that is&nbsp;<em>their<\/em>&nbsp;problem, my friend. Not yours. It\u2019s also gaslighting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Failure<\/em>&nbsp;is just a word. So is&nbsp;<em>fear<\/em>. Say these words repeatedly and see if they don\u2019t start to lose their meaning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the best thing you can do is make a <em>plan.<\/em> Successful campaigns take proper planning and work. It\u2019s a sign of strength.
